FSS: Software and equipment


In addition to the standard Microsoft software, the FSS Library's four workstations are equipped with the software listed below. See the availability of computers by location.

  • SPSS v24
    Statistical analysis software with choice of a graphical user interface or syntax mode.

    Explore the links between all standard levels of geography and determine geographic codes, names, etc.

    R is a programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics.

    Integrated development environment (IDE) for R. Includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor that supports direct
    code execution as well as tools for plotting, history, debugging and workspace management.
  • Artstor Offline Image Viewer (OIV) v4 
    Artstor OIV is a tool for giving offline classroom presentations, downloading images from Artstor and creating digital slide show presentations that feature side-by-side comparisons, zooming and panning, and the ability to customize text on the slides. 
  • SAS v9.4
    SAS (Statistical Analysis System) is a software suite for advanced analytics, multivariate analyses, business intelligence, data management, and predictive analytics. 
  • QGIS v2.16.0 
    Create, edit, visualise, analyse and publish geospatial information with this free and open source geographic information system. 
  • Python v2.7.5150
    Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language.
  • Geomatica 2015
    Software for remote sensing and image processing.
  • SimStat v2.6
    Simstat is a statistical analysis program. It offers output management features, its own scripting language to automate statistical analysis and to write small applications, interactive tutorials with multimedia capabilities, as well as computer assisted interviewing systems. 
  • DLXVG3 v7
    DLXVG3 is a powerful yet simple-to-use application designed for analytical use of Haver’s time-series data. DLXVG3 can be used to view data, create charts and easily create Excel spreadsheets as well as many other features. See the user manual here for details on the topic of your choice.
  • SAGA GIS v2.1.2
    SAGA (System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses), is a free and open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software that has been designed for an easy and effective implementation of spatial algorithms. It offers a comprehensive, growing set of geoscientific methods and provides an easily approachable user interface with many visualisation options.

    Write-N-Cite is a utility that allows users to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in Microsoft Word. You can access your references by folder (or sub-folder), by quick search or by all references with the ability to sort by author, title or year.

    A flexible and easy-to-use text analysis software.
  • Zotero v4.0.29.10
    Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share research sources.

Social Sciences computer laboratories

Three computer labs are located on the second floor of Vanier Hall. They can be used outside of class hours. The labs can be accessed via the second floor bridge connecting FSS to Vanier. VNR 2008 has 33 computers, VNR 2015 has 42 computers and VNR 2025 has 52 computers.

Software available includes : Microsoft Office Suite, SPSS, SAS, AMOS, STAT/Transfer, EVIEWS, Mathematica, NVivo, E-Prime and Stata.

Printing, scanning and photocopying

A printer and a photocopier/scanner are located in VNR 2007, which is accessible via the second floor bridge connecting FSS to Vanier. The next closest printers, scanners and photocopiers are in LMX 250 (Educational Centre).

Book drop box

The book drop box is located at the end of the main elevator bank on the first floor of the FSS building (across from the student-use microwaves).
