Biographical history

Lee Lakeman is a feminist activist, writer, and speaker who fought to end violence against women. Lee has worked with the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centers (CASAC) and Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter since 1977. At CASAC, she was regional representative for BC from 1984-2014 and, in 2003, wrote the report "Canada's Promises to Keep: The Charter and Violence Against Women" as part of a five-year project to unite Canadian feminist anti-violence groups to utilize shared knowledge of crisis work, research, and political activity. Lee authored the book "Obsession with Intent: Violence Against Women" (2005) and numerous articles published in academic and non-academic journals on violence against women and women's rights. In 1995, Lee served as special advisor to Canada's Federal Minister of Justice as part of the Canadian delegation to the Ninth United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Treatment of the Offender. In 2013, Lee received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia in recognition of her service to social, economic, and legal equality for women.
