Administrative history

The British Columbia Federation of Women is an umbrella group for women's organizations in British Columbia. It was founded in 1974. Its goal was to organize province-wide action on women's issues, and it was particularly concerned with health, child care, education and employment. The Federation's objective was also to provide a network of support for women’s diverse struggles and “to overcome the physical and cultural isolation faced by all our sisters in this society ’’. Only women groups were affiliated with the federation. BCFW coordinators defined the organisation as “a linking together mechanism”. At the Annual General Convention delegates from each of the regions elected committee members and voted on policy resolutions. Vancouver Rape Relief was a member of the British Columbia Federation of Women and was one of the few remaining groups when the federation folded in 1989.

Custodial history

This fonds was given to the University of Ottawa Archives and Special Collections in 1996 by the coordinator of the Vancouver Rape Relief & Women’s shelter organisation at the time. Vancouver Rape Relief was a member group of the British Columbia Federation of Women and it was one of the few remaining groups when the federation folded in 1984. Vancouver Rape Relief agreed to store the remaining documents at that time and then decided in 1996 to give them to the University of Ottawa Archives and Special Collections for safe keeping and public use.

Scope and content

This fonds is composed of textual records relating to British Columbia Federation of Women (BCFW). It includes administrative documents such as meeting minutes, reports, position papers as well as correspondence with member groups. This fonds offers a great insight into the structure and activities of an umbrella organization for women’s groups in British Columbia during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
