Emma Joy Reeves was born in January 1928 in Manchester, England, to a working class family. From 1943 to 1945 she received secretarial and business training from the College of Commerce in Manchester. For more than 30 years, she worked as a medical secretary in different doctors' offices. From 1957 to 1961, she trained as a Hospital Welfare Worker and then became a Geriatric Social Worker. In 1965, following a divorce after 12 years of marriage, she moved to Germany and in 1968 emigrated to New York. A year later, Joy Reeves moved to San Francisco and became involved in the feminist movement. Joy Reeves had been involved with her former husband in the protest against Nuclear Warfare since the end of the Second World War. In 1973, she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. In Canada, she is better known under the pen name Emma Joy Crone, a feminist writer and lesbian. She published “The common woman” in August 2005. She has also published articles and poetry in many magazines such as Herspectives.

Emma Joy Reeves est née en janvier 1928 à Manchester, en Angleterre, dans une famille ouvrière. De 1943 à 1945, elle suit une formation en secrétariat et en commerce au College of Commerce de Manchester. Pendant plus de 30 ans, elle a travaillé comme secrétaire médicale dans différents cabinets médicaux. De 1957 à 1961, elle suit une formation d'assistante sociale hospitalière, puis devient assistante sociale en gériatrie. En 1965, à la suite d'un divorce après 12 ans de mariage, elle s'est installée en Allemagne et a émigré à New York en 1968. Un an plus tard, Joy Reeves s'installe à San Francisco et s'engage dans le mouvement féministe. Joy Reeves a participé avec son ancien mari à la protestation contre la guerre nucléaire depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1973, elle s'installe à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique. Au Canada, elle est plus connue sous le nom de plume d'Emma Joy Crone, écrivain féministe et lesbienne. Elle a publié ""The common woman"" en août 2005. Elle a également publié des articles et des poèmes dans de nombreux magazines tels que Herspectives.
