Biographical history

Elizabeth Sheehy holds an LL.B., an LL.M., and an LL.D. (Honoris causa). She started teaching at the University of Ottawa in 1984 and has been a Full Professor since 1995. She held the Shirley Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession from 2013 to 2015 and previously held the Chair when it was first established in 2002-2004. Professor Sheehy has participated in various educational programs for the Canadian Judicial Institute on topics such as sexual assault, wife assault, and women and girls in the justice system. In 1999 she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Common Law Students’ Society at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law.

She has been a Member of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1987. She was co-counsel for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) in its intervention in R v JA (“advance consent” to sexual assault) (2011 SCC 28).

Professor Sheehy is involved in many other law reform activities around equality rights and social justice issues. In 2009 she convened the first national conference in Canada on sexual assault law, entitled Sexual Assault Law, Practice and Activism in a Post-Jane Doe Era and currently sits on the Advisory Board for Informed Opinions, a national organization dedicated to including women’s expert voices in Canadian public discourse.

Elizabeth Sheehy est titulaire d'un LL.B., d'un LL.M. et d'un LL.D. (Honoris causa). Elle a commencé à enseigner à l'Université d'Ottawa en 1984 et est professeur titulaire depuis 1995. Elle a été titulaire de la Chaire Shirley Greenberg sur les femmes et la profession juridique de 2013 à 2015 et avait déjà occupé cette chaire lors de sa création en 2002-2004. Le professeur Sheehy a participé à divers programmes éducatifs pour l'Institut canadien de la magistrature sur des sujets tels que l'agression sexuelle, l'agression contre l'épouse et les femmes et les filles dans le système judiciaire. En 1999, elle a reçu le prix d'excellence en enseignement de la Société des étudiants en common law de la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa.

Scope and content

The fonds mainly consists of trial transcripts used by Elizabeth Sheehy for her research about violence against women. The trials focus on instances of mariticide following abuse. This research culminated in her book Defending Battered Women on Trial: Lessons for the Transcripts published by UBC press in 2014. The fonds also contains newspaper clippings related to violence against women, homicide [particularly where women have killed their abusers (mariticide)]. Also includes works by Elizabeth Sheehy and conference materials.

Le fonds se compose principalement de transcriptions de procès utilisées par Elizabeth Sheehy dans le cadre de ses recherches sur la violence à l'égard des femmes. Les procès portent sur des cas de mariages forcés à la suite d'abus. Ces recherches ont abouti à la publication de son livre Defending Battered Women on Trial : Lessons for the Transcripts publié par UBC Press en 2014.
