Campaigns and Subject Files

Series consists of records of NAC priority actions and issue campaigns for each year dealing with various subjects. The series also includes other issue-oriented events that were not sponsored by NAC but were a concern for women (ie. International Women’s Year 1975, or Free Trade).

Research for The taking of twenty-eight

The file consists of research conducted by Penney Kome for her book-length work, "The Taking of Twenty-Eight," on women's challenging of the Canadian Constitution.

The file contains correspondence, briefs, meeting records, notices and news clippings relating mostly to the work of the Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women on the Constitution to have women's equality rights enshrined within Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

NAC members

This series documents NAC members' participation at events, such as mid-year meetings and Annual General Meetings. The photographs show participants addressing meetings and parliamentary caucus' and also participating in demonstrations on Parliament Hill and engaging in protests against federal budget cuts.

The file includes headshots and portraits of former NAC presidents, as well as group photographs.

Records of the Executive Committee

Series consists of records related to the administration of the Executive Committee, including personnel, membership, wages and compensation, projects, policies, elections etc. Includes reports, notes, correspondence and other records.

This series also has 3 sub-series: Minutes of Executive Committee meetings, Mid-Year Meetings and Activity and Regional Reports.


The series contains records related to the production of French and English NAC publications, including "Status of Women News," "Action Bulletin" and "Feminist Action." The series documents the editorial processes of the non-profit women's organization, and includes copyedited texts and masters copies of published material, as well as correspondence with contributors.

The series includes examples of published NAC texts.

Journal records

This series consists of NAC's outgoing and received correspondence, originally filed as "Journals," by NAC. The correspondence includes both received and outgoing letters, communiqués, newsletters, reports, telegrams and government press releases.

The records relate to a range of issues, such as the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement, the Meech Lake Accord, initiatives against domestic violence, anti-pornography legislation, the disarmament movement, Indigenous communities' organizations, gun control legislation and cutbacks in funding to the Women's Programme.

Annual General Meeting Records

Series consists of records created and used for the National Action Committee on the Status of Women's annual general meeting that occurred typically in March. It includes records used for planning purposes such as lists of invitees and members, nominations for executive, budgets, travel and accommodation arrangement, funding for delegates, invites and correspondence, parliamentary lobby documents, etc., as well as records used at the meetings including conference kits, agendas and meeting minutes, copies of the Annual Report, recordings of proceedings, copies of speeches, etc. The records in this series provide an overview of all of the activities, focus and interests of NAC for each year from 1974 to 1994.

Financial records

This series documents NAC's fiscal activities, such as budgets, Women's Program grant applications and bilingualism development records. The series includes finance committee meeting records as well as NAC's Direct Mail program and its campaign against federal budget cuts to the Women's Program.
