Briefs, papers and publications

The series consists of copies of briefs, addresses, and papers written and prepared by/for the National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) and its regional caucuses (groups), and by its members. The series includes copies of NAWL publications that were available for purchase. Note that many of the briefs in this series were written for and presented at the NAWL biennial conferences or at workshops. The series also contains papers collected by NAWL on various legal issues.

Records of the National Steering Committee

The series consists of material starting from the early days of NAWL and its beginnings after the 1974 Windsor conference on Women and the Law and the Interim Organizing Committee based out of the University of Ottawa Law School. The National Steering Committee was established in 1975. Records include by-laws and constitutions, resolutions, meeting minutes and reports as well as correspondence.

Records related to NAWL caucus'

The series contains records primarily from the Ottawa Caucus which started as the Women and the Law Association of the University of Ottawa, Common Law Faculty in 1974. Includes minutes of meetings, reports, correspondence and memos, membership, etc. The series also contains correspondence from the caucus' to the Steering Committee

NAWL Charitable Trust

The series consists of records of the NAWL Charitable Trust . The Trust, as a registered charity, was established in 1983 to complement NAWL’s advocacy work. It's mandate includes undertaking research and education on legal issues concerning all aspects of the social, economic and political life of Canadian women. It assists in the protection of women’s civil rights and liberties by charitable means, as well as in the relief of poverty.
Records in this series include trust meeting minutes, memos, correspondence, trustee lists, etc.

Records related to the essay contest

The series consists of records related to the annual essay competition presented by the National Association of Women and the Law Charitable Trust. The trust promoted the equality of rights of women through research and public education on legal issues affecting women. The winner of the contest received $500. The records include posters about the contest, correspondence, copies of essay submissions and discussions on ranking essays by the judges.

Photographs

Series consists of black and white/coloured photographs, strips of negatives and projector slides pertaining to the members and activities of NAWL, the latter of which includes conferences, projects and meetings. Photographs also feature various groups associated with NAWL's activities such as the Elizabeth Fry Society, Advisory Council on the Status of Women [P.E.I.?], Women's Network P.E.I., and All-China Women's Federation (ACWF).

Records of the National Office

This series includes the records of the National Office of NAWL which coordinates the work of the association. The National Office has 4 staff members: The Executive Director, the Director of Legislation and Law Reform, an Administrative Officer and a Communications Officer.

Conferences

Series consists of records related to the conference held biennially. Records include conference planning materials, funding, grants, correspondence, reports, recordings of conference proceedings, speeches, etc. The Annual General Meetings (AGM) were held at the same time as the conference. AGM minutes are included in this series.
