Branching Out fonds

This fonds contains mostly textual documents but also some photographs and scrapbooks. It includes the administrative documents of the magazine such as minutes, reports, mailing lists, and guidelines for the organization. It also includes documents relating to editorial development, manuscript submissions and correspondence with authors, correspondence with other organizations and involvement in conferences and workshops. Sharon Batt, editor of Branching Out was also on the board of Canadian Periodical Publishers' Association and involved in the Writers' Guild of Alberta and so as a result some documents relating to these organizations are also included.

This fonds consists of material relating to the Women of Impact in the Canadian Materials, Metallurgy, and Mining Fields oral history research project. It contains audio and video interviews of 18 women pioneers and leaders in the fields of mining, metallurgy and materials. It also contains interview transcripts, and the Women of Impact book which profiles each of the interviewees.

These records are textual documents which cover the activities of the organization from its foundation in 1970 to 1991. They consist of administrative records, correspondence, planning documents for outreach and projects as well as rich information on other women’s groups during its period of operation. These records offer significant information about the grassroots feminist movement in Canada, particularly in Ottawa, in the 1980s. They also offer insight into the methods of organization, aims, activities and problems shared by many women's centres across the country.

This fonds is composed mainly of textual records; the administrative records of Mothers Are Women and documents relating to policy issues such as child care, parental leave, and recognition of the value of stay at home mothers. There are also documents relating to each of the mother's support groups and also the group's newsletter, Homebase. There are two audio cassettes featuring interviews with Maureen Kellerman on radio programs.

It also contains, legal briefs, lobbying strategies, and testimony in support of midwifery. This fonds consists of documents relating to the creation of a comprehensive guide to women's movement archives in Canada. The ‘guide’ came about because the CWMA saw the need for a national bilingual guide to women’s groups with records specifically relating to the Women’s Movement. The CWMA undertook a preliminary survey in 1985/1986 and this survey became a pilot project for the final guide. In 1989, the Canadian Research Tools program of the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRCC) awarded the CWMA a grant to produce a guide to the records of the women’s movement; the two-year project began in 1990 and was completed in 1992. The detailed Name Index was compiled to provide access to the records of groups known by more than one name. The Subject Index accommodates researchers’ interest in specific women’s issues. Not all women’s groups were included, e.g. charities run by women, also excluded were government departments and councils. The guide is divided into two parts; the first lists records held by archives, the second lists records held by organizations. Arranged hierarchically; national, provincial etc, geographically; east to west, and alphabetically.
It lists archival holdings of about 800 collections representing 650 groups.

The majority of the documents in the fonds are textual, however, there are some microform and computer disks. The documents consist of project plans, funding applications and reports, correspondence, questionnaires, lists of women's groups, and proofs of the final version. This fonds gives an accurate snapshot of records relating to the women's movement in Canada in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

This collection consists of various documents collected by Pamela Andrews and related to the feminist movement. It contains pamphlets, a brochure, programs of a benefit concert, of a workshop theatre productions and other materials from various organizations including the Assaulted Women’s Hotline, the DisAbled Women’s Network (DAWN) and the Midwifery Task Group. It also includes photocopied press clippings related to the Direct Action Group’s statements of resistance regarding the Litton bombing and 14 buttons from organizations pertaining mostly to women’s rights and issues such as health, birth control and abortion.
