The Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA), a national alliance of forty Canadian women's organizations, was founded in 1999 to monitor the Canadian government's implementation of human rights commitments to women, such as those adopted at UN women's conference throughout the last few decades of the 20th century. FAFIA pooled resources and expertise to develop and disseminate new knowledge about women's human rights in an international context. Furthermore, FAFIA disseminated knowledge about the Canadian government's action (or rather, inaction) on their commitments within international agreements. FAFIA played a role in coordinating NGO participation at the Beijing +5 Conference, a follow-up to the Fourth UN World Conference on Women which took place in Beijing, China in 1995. FAFIA also played a role in the development of the Beijing +5 Platform for Action, and other important documents related to Beijing Conference follow-up. Additionally, the organization benefited from a close working relationship with numerous federal government departments, most importantly with Status of Women Canada, but also with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Human Resources Development Canada, and Heritage Canada. FAFIA sought to develop new tools for integrating gender-based analysis in policy-making, such as Integrated Feminist Analysis and Monitoring Mechanisms, which expanded gender-based analysis to include considerations of race, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, age, geographic location, First Nation status, and income. While FAFIA still exists today, the records held at University of Ottawa Archives and Special Collections are primarily related to the first five years of their work (1999-2004).

L'Alliance canadienne féministe pour l'action internationale (AFAI), une alliance nationale de quarante organisations féminines canadiennes, a été fondée en 1999 pour surveiller la mise en œuvre par le gouvernement canadien des engagements en matière de droits humains des femmes, tels que ceux adoptés lors des conférences des Nations unies sur les femmes au cours des dernières décennies du 20e siècle. L'AFAI a mis en commun ses ressources et son expertise pour développer et diffuser de nouvelles connaissances sur les droits humains des femmes dans un contexte international. En outre, l'AFAI a diffusé des informations sur l'action (ou plutôt l'inaction) du gouvernement canadien par rapport à ses engagements dans le cadre d'accords internationaux. L'AFAI a joué un rôle dans la coordination de la participation des ONG à la conférence Beijing +5, qui fait suite à la quatrième conférence mondiale des Nations unies sur les femmes qui s'est tenue à Beijing, en Chine, en 1995. L'AFAI a également joué un rôle dans l'élaboration de la plate-forme d'action Pékin +5 et d'autres documents importants liés au suivi de la conférence de Pékin. En outre, l'organisation a bénéficié d'une relation de travail étroite avec de nombreux ministères fédéraux, en particulier avec Condition féminine Canada, mais aussi avec le ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international, le ministère du Développement des ressources humaines et le ministère du Patrimoine canadien. L'AFAI s'est efforcée de mettre au point de nouveaux outils pour intégrer l'analyse comparative entre les sexes dans l'élaboration des politiques, tels que les mécanismes d'analyse et de suivi féministes intégrés, qui ont élargi l'analyse comparative entre les sexes pour y inclure des considérations relatives à la race, au handicap, à l'orientation sexuelle, à la situation matrimoniale, à l'âge, à la situation géographique, au statut de Première nation et au revenu. Bien que l'AFAI existe encore aujourd'hui, les documents conservés aux Archives et collections spéciales de l'Université d'Ottawa concernent principalement les cinq premières années de son travail (1999-2004).
