Biographical history

Rosemary Barnes is a psychologist. Before working in independent practice, she worked at Toronto General and Women’s College Hospitals. She has been affiliated with the University of Toronto, York University, and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She has published on suicide, HIV conditions, and residential schools, and has provided expert opinion in legal cases relating to lesbian/gay issues and trauma.

Rosemary Barnes est psychologue. Avant d'exercer en libéral, elle a travaillé à l'hôpital général de Toronto et au Women's College Hospital. Elle a été affiliée à l'Université de Toronto, à l'Université York et à l'Institut d'études pédagogiques de l'Ontario. Biographical history

Susan Schellenberg, artist and writer, began her career as a public nurse. In 1980, she committed to healing from a 1969 psychosis and ten-year course of anti-psychotic drigs and to keeping a visual-art and written record of her dreams and inner journey as her mind healed. Her Shedding Skins series, dream art with text, is a on permanent exhibit in the main lobby as the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

En 1980, elle s'est engagée à guérir d'une psychose survenue en 1969 et d'une cure de dix ans de médicaments antipsychotiques, et à garder une trace visuelle et écrite de ses rêves et de son cheminement intérieur au fur et à mesure de la guérison de son esprit. Sa série Shedding Skins, art du rêve avec texte, est exposée en permanence dans le hall principal du Centre for Addiction and Mental Health à Toronto.

The Susan Schellenberg and Rosemary Barnes fonds documents the collaboration between the two women, particularly in their joint reflections on the contributions and limitations of conventional mental health care and their joint search for alternatives such as art therapy. Susan Schellenberg and Rosemary Barnes first met in 1990, when they were both active in the struggle of Women's College Hospital against merger with Toronto General Hospital. They co-authored the book "Committed to the Sane Asylum: Narratives on Mental Wellness and Healing". The fonds documents the various reflections, presentations and articles that emerged from this collaboration. The fonds also documents Susan Schellenberg's artistic work through several documents related to the exhibition Entertaining the Cauldron of Snakes: Shedding Skins.
