Scope and content

This series concerns records related to Monique Frize’s activities as professor and as chair holder at the UNB. Professor of Electrical and Clinical Engineering, Monique Frize was the first holder of the Northern Telecom-NSERC Women in Engineering Chair at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton. In May 1989, the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, professor Frank Wilson, approached Northern Telecom and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), two of the largest funding bodies in Canada, to establish a Women in Engineering Chair at the University of New Brunswick. Dr. Monique Frize was appointed on 1st December 1989. As chairholder, Monique Frize’s mandate was to spend half of her time as a role model through fulfilling academic and scholarly functions (research, teaching, and supervision of graduate students) and spend the other half on activities that would lead to an increased participation of women in this profession, at all levels. As a role model for young women engineering students, Monique Frize developed programs to recruit and retain women in engineering. She met with students and parent groups across the country. Her goal was to increase enrolment by women in science and engineering.
