This fonds consists of correspondence from the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses regarding nursing sisters in the First World War and files on the creation and inauguration of a memorial to Canadian nursing sisters, 1922-1926. Constitution, bylaws, minutes and correspondence of the Overseas Nursing Sisters’ Association of Canada (1928-1944) and the Canadian Nursing Sisters’ Association (1944-1998). Membership directories, lists of executives, nominal rolls and awards, 1926-1986. Material for publications on the history of Canadian nursing sisters. Minutes, reports and correspondence of the Ottawa unit, 1931-1992. Memorabilia from nursing sisters, 1885-1987.

Biography/Administrative History: 

The Northwest Rebellion of 1885 marked the first time nurses, called nursing sisters, officially served with the Canadian military. Three groups of nursing sisters looked after Canadian troops during the South African War. In 1906, a permanent nursing service was established and the nursing sisters were given officer rank. Over 3 000 nursing sister served in the First World War, 4 480 in the Second World War and 60 in the Korean War.
