Biography/Administrative History:

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) was founded in 1881 in Britain. In 1902, a Canadian section of the SCI was established. It was the first and only chemical organization in Canada until the First World War. By the end of the Second World War, other chemical organisations had been created and the Canadian SCI section was dissolved. Former SCI members successfully petitioned the parent section to re-establish the Canadian section in the late 1940s. The re-established Canadian SCI provides a forum of interchange between the government, industry and universities, and creates opportunities for discussion between Canadian chemical industry workers.
