Founded in 1957, the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences' mandate is to promote the ideas, research and interests of Canadian nutritional scientists who previously had relied on the American Nutrition Society. The establishing principles of the Society were to extend the knowledge of nutrition by encouraging research; to provide opportunities for discussion of research findings; to facilitate the flow of information and to represent the interests of the nutritional science field in Canada. Initially the Society focussed on livestock nutrition, their focus shifted to human nutrition as public interest in that area grew.
