Pocket Compass

Pocket compasses were common instruments used by surveyors to measure direction with respect to Magnetic North. According to the donor of this compass to the Canada Science and Technology Museum, J. Herbert Kerr used it while surveying in Western Canada in the late 1800s.

What follows is our investigation of the origins of this compass based on physical features and historical documents.
