Meet the Design Team
In 2011, the national capital put out a commission regarding the need to renovate the National Arts Center, calling on all architectural firms who might be willing to take on the large task. The firms interested then submitted a portfolio of their work as an application for the project. Among the various candidates, Diamond Schmitt was chosen to begin work on the center.
Diamond Schmitt Architects
Diamond Schmitt Architects is an architectural firm located in Toronto, Ontario. The name of the company comes from its two founders, Jack Diamond, and Robert Schmitt. The firm has worked on various projects, mainly based in Toronto. However, they’ve also done an array of works outside Toronto, like in Ottawa, Hamilton, Vancouver, and even around the United States, as well as parts of Europe. Various projects of theirs include the Four Seasons for the Performing Arts (Toronto), the Shakespeare Theatre (Washington, D.C.), and the Foreign Ministry of Israel (Jerusalem, Israel).
Jennifer Mallard
Jennifer Mallard is a Principal Architect with Diamond Schmitt who worked on the new addition to the NAC. She and her team were responsible for the new designs to the Elgin Street entrance and lobby, as well as the changes to Southam Hall.
Threshold Acoustics
Diamond Schmitt worked with Theshold Acoustics, a Chigaco-based acoustician firm, on the acoustic modification of the Hall. Threshold Acoustics has also worked on a large number of different projects ranging from the performing arts, to halls of worship, museums, and classrooms.
